Obituary: on 19 June 2013: Carmen Vella Bear passed away peacefully in her home on June 11, at age 69. Her husband, John, children Frank and Rita, and her sister, Tess, were by her side. Her stepson, Aaron, was also on hand and of great comfort to Carmen in her final days.

Carmen was born to Frank and Josephine Mizzi, somewhere between Sept. 8 and Sept. 28, on her parents’ farm in Malta. She was one of seven fun-loving sisters and had four good-natured brothers.

Carmen moved to the United States when she was 17 years old. She had many jobs and wore many hats over the years. Her first job in the United States was working at Ampex. It was there she met her best friend, John, who would later become her husband. In more recent years, Carmen enjoyed donating time working at the local Senior Coastsiders Thrift Store.

Carmen liked to travel and went to various locales, including Australia, to visit some of her sisters and one of her brothers, and to Malta to see her family. She took road trips to Iowa for the Bear family reunion, traveled to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with the Thompsons, and took a cruise to the Caribbean. When she was young she presented flowers to the Queen of England, and she even met the pope on a visit in Italy. Wherever Carmen went, people were instantly attracted to her and loved her.

Carmen had one of those magnetic personalities that was infectious. She was a firecracker, had an easy laugh, told stories, and was incredibly fun to be around. She loved going to parties, threw many parties herself, and hosted events like Christmas each year. If Carmen knew that you did not have a place to go for Christmas, you would be invited straight away to the Bear house. She was a natural leader. No matter what your age, you wanted to be with her. Carmen was straightforward and never hid her feelings. If she liked you, you knew it, and she would do anything for you.

She liked to go to garage sales and crochet and she loved to cook. Carmen had the uncanny ability to go into a restaurant and decode the ingredients of any dish. She would then go home and cook it better than the restaurant did. She loved living in Half Moon Bay. Carmen took frequent walks on the Coastal Trail to take in the view and get a little exercise. She would march in the Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival parades with her grandkids. You may have seen her dressed as a tightrope walker, a Greek goddess or a stagecoach hand.

Carmen’s greatest life pleasure was being with her family, which includes her husband and best friend for more than 50 years, John; her sisters, Tessie, Maria, Stella, Rita, Doris and Janie; her brothers, Wenzu, Giuseppe, Kalinu, and Leli; her children, Rita Semprevivo (Steve), Frank Vella (Sandy), Ida Robb (Jim), and Aaron Bear; and of course all her grandchildren who put a sparkle in her eye and a hop in her step. They are Adam, Jordan, Eliot, Katie and Vince. She will be dearly missed by family and friends and in our thoughts for all eternity.
